Salad packs good for environment and consumer

Huhtamaki claims to be one of the first companies to use both recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and thermoformed food packaging techniques for its new salad packs.

Manufacturers are under increasing pressure to use materials that are good for the environment but will also ease consumer fears over health safety.

The Finnish firm's new thermoformed packs are film-sealed, keeping the product fresh. It also allows the consumer to spot when the product has been tampered with or damaged, the manufacturers claim.

"Despite the recycled content the performance characteristics include excellent clarity, good crack resistance and excellent gas barrier properties," they added.

The pots come in three different sizes, each able to hold salad weighing 180g, 300g and 600g respectively.

Their flat shape means that five pots can fit in the space of four round containers, according to the manufacturers.

"More products can be stacked on the supermarket shelf. This maximizes sales by reducing the time shelves are out of stock, and also reduces the amount of labour needed to fill shelves," they said.

Huhtamaki is a packaging company based in Finland that focuses on paper, plastic, films and molded fibre.

It has 66 manufacturing units and several sales offices in 36 countries worldwide, and had net sales of €2.3bn, the company said.
