ACP 'task force' will bring balance to packaging debate

The Advisory Committee on Packaging (ACP) is to set up a communications "task force" to bring more balance to the public debate about packaging.

ACP chair John Turner told Packaging News that the task force would aim to highlight more of the facts about packaging to present the industry as "much more of the good guy instead of the bad guy".

"There are cases of over-packaging that need to be addressed," he said. "But the industry needs to get together a decent story that describes the facts.

"It needs to be more proactive about sectors where it has reduced the weight of packaging, for example, aluminium cans."

The task force will run for the next year or so and Turner said the ACP would look to form alliances with other industry bodies such as the Packaging Federation and the Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment.

Turner also warned that packaging must not be minimised to the extent that it "interferes with the overall supply chain".

"You always have to remember that packaging has to be fit for purpose," he said.

The ACP advises government ministers and officials on packaging issues.
