Associated Brands Industries Limited (ABIL), San Juan, Trinidad, is a leading manufacturer and distributor of chocolate confectionery products, snack foods, and cookies/crackers with distribution to more than 20 countries. The company packages more than a dozen different products in film/foil wraps and uses seven different tray sizes for shipping.
ABIL wanted to improve tray shipper packing to accommodate its expanding markets, and called upon Sigpack Systems AG (www.sigpacksystems.com), a Bosch Packaging Technology company, to assist in the operations upgrade.
After evaluating the options, ABIL selected and installed the Sigpack Model TTL-i toploader robotic tray-pack system to package its wide variety of products. The new, compact system packages the 14 different product formats in seven different tray sizes and allows for fast, simple changeovers.
Robot forms, loads, and closes trays
The machine combines three functionalities—tray forming, tray top-loading, and tray closing. The intelligent robot handling of the TTL-I makes it possible to perform handling and top-loading of the trays in a small amount of floor space. And all power supply lines for vacuum, pneumatic air pressure, and electric sensors are integrated in a connecting plate that holds the product gripper. When changing the product gripper to accommodate a new product format, the operator does not have to worry about reconnection of cables and plugs.
In addition, the tray-forming and tray-closing tools are adjustable for the whole format range, so operators do not have to disassemble the machine to accomplish format changeovers, thus cutting line downtime and labor time.
