Growth Forecast for Active and Intelligent Packaging Markets

The active and intelligent packaging market is expected to grow by 13% a year to reach $1.1bn in 2011, research firm Freedonia Group says.

The intelligent packaging sector is forecast to expand 31.5% annually, from $42m in 2006 to $165m in 2012.

Freedonia says the growth will come from the emergence of lower cost time-temperature indicator labels and a growing awareness of these products as critical tools in reducing losses in perishables from temperature abuse in the supply chain.

Growth in the moisture control packaging sector will grow by only 5.9% a year to reach $300m, caused by the maturity of products such as desiccants and purge control pads.

US demand for gas scavengers is expected to grow by 13.8%annually, based on changes in the food product mix and increased cost competitiveness driving the use of oxygen scavengers.

Freedonia says food and beverage packaging accounted for 72% of the active and intelligent packaging market in 2006.
