French merchant courts multiples for UK launch of wine in Tetra Pak

Bordeaux wine merchant Cordier Mestrezat Grand Crus is in talks with UK supermarkets over the launch of its Tandem range of wine in Tetra Pak cartons.

Cordier developed the range in partnership with one of its shareholders, the Val D'Orbieu group of wine growers based near Norbonne in the south of France.

Each pack contains two servings of wine, which is drunk through a straw that has been specially designed by Tetra Pak to simulate drinking from a glass.

Cordier export director Pierre-Eric Sabatier said: "The straw has got four holes so that when you drink it really fills your palette in the same way as a glass of wine."

Trials of the packs of red and white wine began in Belgian supermarket Delhaize in July and sales have exceeded expectations.

It has been reported that Cordier is in talks with Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons in the UK, but Sabatier declined to comment on specific companies.

"Belgium is the test market, but we've already shown the product to major supermarkets in the UK. They are aware of it and we've started discussions with one of them."

The wine has been sold alongside sandwiches in the snack aisle of supermarkets in Belgium to emphasise that it can be taken on the go.

Cordier's move comes after Sainsbury's introduced wine in an Amcor PET bottle, while Arniston Bay launched wine in a pouch in May.
