Scientists Develop Non-Stick Coating for Packaging

To the relief of barbeque lovers everywhere, scientists have solved the age old problem of getting the last drops of ketchup from the bottle.

Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging and the Munich University of Technology have developed a film that can be applied to packaging to reduce stickiness.

The thin films applied to the inside of packaging are made from a plasma already in use in neon lamps, scientist Dr Michaela Müller says.

"It is done by placing the plastics into a vacuum. We introduce gases into this vacuum chamber and ignite them by applying a voltage," she explains.

"We can deposit different coatings with defined properties on the surface of the packaging."

The scientists are now studying the coating's resistance to mechanical stress and temperature fluctuations.

It is hoped the film will be used in commercial applications in two to three years.
