The European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment (EUROPEN) says the packaging industry should not allow the Wal-Mart score card system to become the de facto packaging standard.
EUROPEN managing director Julian Carroll says if the Wal-Mart scorecard becomes overly emphasised it could inhibit innovation, rather than a stimulate it.
"Just getting a high score for your packaging with Wal-mart should not be a reason to rest on your laurels," he says.
Wal-Mart's scorecard requires all suppliers of packaging goods to submit data about their packaging and its environmental influence.
It is judged on a range of criteria, including greenhouse gas emission, recycled material content and methods of waste recovery.
