11% Growth Forecast For Active and Intelligent Packaging

Demand for active and intelligent packaging in the US is expected to grow by 13% annually to reach a market value of US$1.1bn by 2011, according to analysis by industry researchers the Freedonia Group.

According to Freedonia, growth in the sector will be fuelled by the development of new products and improved cost-effectiveness, which will increase competition.

In intelligent packaging, growth is expected to top 30% per year to reach US$165m in 2011, based on the mergence of lower cost time-temperature indicator labels and the growing awareness of the benefits of this type of packaging in maintaining food freshness.

Active packaging will reach US$975m in 2011, a rise of 11% a year, fuelled by robust growth for gas scavengers based on changes in the food product mix and increased cost-effectiveness driving expanded applications for oxygen scavengers.

The food and beverage market accounted for 72% of demand for active and intelligent packaging in 2006.
