Body found at site of Wealmoor blaze

Rescue crews looking for the three missing firefighters at the burned-out Wealmoor fruit and vegetable packing warehouse in Atherstone-on-Stour have found the body of one man.

The three men, who have been named as Darren Yates-Badley, Ashley Stephens and John Averis, along with Ian Reid, who died in hospital, were described as heroes by Warwickshire chief fire officer William Brown.

"Our work involves us in often difficult and sometimes highly dangerous call-outs. These professional men were doing their job of controlling a raging fire – with a tragic outcome," he said.

The identity of the body has not been confirmed.

John Hall of Hereford and Worcester Fire Service described the monumental task facing the teams.

"Basically, it's like walking into St Paul's Cathedral, going from one side to the other searching, while rebuilding the floor and roof supports as you go," he said.

The 150 staff that worked in the building have all been accounted for.
