Almost 80% of people plan to buy food with less packaging during the next year, according to a new survey by The Times.
The research by Populus revealed that a majority of people want supermarkets to tackle all packaging rather than focus solely on plastic bags.
Almost 70% of respondents said they wanted Britain's supermarket giants to commit to removing all packaging on fruit and vegetables, up from 60% a year ago.
The study also found that shoppers would rather see plastic bags scrapped altogether rather than pay a small charge. It found 72% believed that incentives such as reward points were the best way to change behaviour.
The poll found that the Co-op was judged as the most successful in addressing environmental issues. Tesco was still seen as being far less effective in tackling social and environmental issues.
