Packaging Market Weekly Wrap - UC Rusal Plans New Foil Plant

Russian aluminum producer UC Rusal has announced plans to build a US$20m foil packaging plant near Moscow.

With an overall capacity of 20,000t of foil packaging a year, the plant will increase UC Rusal's share of the Russian foil and foil-based packaging market by up to 66 percent.

"The fast growing market is forcing manufacturers to expand and renew their range of products", says packaging division director Alexander Burdin.

The company hopes to double the production of its alufoil-based flexible packaging in Russia within three years.

Construction on the plant will begin in 2008 with first production scheduled for the end of 2009.

MALASIA OPENS WAY FOR PACKAGING ENTREPRENEURS

Malaysia's Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) is to set up a packaging and branding centre to help entrepreneurs brand and market their products.

The centre, expected to open in Johor next year, will offer marketing training "to enable entrepreneurs to seek markets for their products", say FAMA.

"Small entrepreneurs can bring their products to the centre and get assistance on how to package them," says Malaysia's Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

MONDI UPGRADES GLOBAL COATING SITE

Mondi Packaging Coating & Release is to invest more than £7m on upgrading its production facilities in the Czech Republic, Sweden and the US.

The company has announced it is to invest more than £4.3m over the next 12 months on building a new site in the Czech Republic to serve the reel wrapping industry and provide building industry products from 2009.

The investment is part of plans to develop its coating and release business in industrial papers.

SCHOTT BUILDS FIRST RUSSIAN FACILITY

Schott Pharmaceutical Packaging is to build the company's first production facility in Russia.

"This move will strengthen the company's leading position and allow for pharmaceutical customers based in the Commonwealth of Independent States to be served more effectively," says chairman of the board of management of Schott AG Prof Dr -Ing Udo Ungeheuer.

In the first phase of development, Schott will manufacture primary pharmaceutical packaging. In a mid-term view, a capacity of approximately 300 million units will be installed, says the company.

The new plant, based in the city of Bor, is expected to become operational in 2009.

TRI-STAR MAKES SUSHI ACQUISITION

UK food packaging company Tri-Star Packaging Supplies has taken over the sushi-packaging division of MG Plastics, the company's third acquisition this year.

Tri-Star, which employs 108 staff, now supplies a vast range of food containers including serviettes and disposable cutlery.
