145 jobs to go as Rexam shuts US plants

Rexam is to close two plastic packaging manufacturing sites in the US following its acquisition of Owens-Illinois Plastics in June.

The plants, located in West Lafayette, Indiana, and Rossville, Georgia, manufacture medical diagnostic products and diagnostic healthcare packaging, respectively.

Rexam employs 60 people at the West Lafayette plant, which opened in 1978 and is scheduled to close in the third quarter of 2008.

The Rossville facility, which employs 85, opened in 1982 and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Rexam said all affected employees would receive a "competitive severance package" in addition to help with finding alternative jobs.

Graham Chipchase, group director of Rexam Plastic Packaging, said the closures were part of Rexam's strategy to "align our manufacturing capabilities".

Rexam's global plastics business employs approximately 16,000 people across 65 plants, serving the healthcare, closures and personal care markets.
