M&S uses post-consumer content in 'complex' lid

Marks & Spencer is using a film with 30% post-consumer waste content for the lids of 400g packs in its Simply Food Fruit Collection range.

The Estergreen PCR1 lidding film from Northampton-based FFP Packaging Solutions uses a DuPont Teijin polyester film with an anti-mist coating, which FFP said enhances shelf appeal and improves product visibility.

M&S senior packaging technologist Mark Caul said the product, which reached shelves in November, showed how materials had developed in the past 12 months to make a complex product "commercially viable".

"Innovative and environmentally based packaging continues to be our primary packaging driver," he added.

Estergreen PCR1 is available as a plain or printed film and can be incorporated into a laminate structure.

It can be used with a range of PET-lined board trays to create an easy-peel lid and can be used for hot, cold or frozen food trays.

The tray forms part of M&S' Plan A, launched at the beginning of 2007, in which it outlined a 25% packaging reduction.
