South America Becomes Major Packaging Player

South America is becoming a major player in the global forest, paper and packaging industries, according to a report by analysts at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

Brazil's packaging industry was worth £7bn in 2006, up 3% from 2005.

Fibre packaging makes up 40% of the market, and 80% of this by volume is corrugated casing, but it is only 65% of the market value.

However, the PwC says there are regulatory, governmental and infrastructural barriers which may act as a brake on the region realising its economic potential.
