Belgium has been fined for failing to comply with packaging waste regulations.
The European Commission has ordered the country to pay the costs for failing to adopt the "laws, regulations and administrative provisions necessary" to comply with Directive 2004/12/EC and amending Directive 94/62/EC.
These cover minimum recycling targets, return, collection and recovery systems, and packaging waste prevention measures.
EU members were obliged to comply with these regulations by 18 August 2005 and inform the European Commission that they had done so.
Brussels received a final warning in July last year.
Belgium's main concerns are compliance with Article 6 in Directive 94/62/EC, which covers recovery and recycling targets.
