Food manufacturers should benchmark their level of packaging automation against industry standards to ensure they do not fall behind the competition, according to a report published at Total.
The study by the University of Lincoln, Holbeach Campus, which was supported by Ishida Europe, also said there were few differences in automation levels in the UK, France and Germany, although Germany had higher full-line automation rates.
Food makers often perceived that automation could restrict flexibility, particularly where short runs and frequent changeovers were common.
However, they also saw benefits in being able to reduce labour costs and improve production efficiency and product consistency.
The study, available on the Ishida Europe stand, said food manufacturers should evaluate suppliers based on their total offer, including after-sales service and training.
Ishida Europe marketing manager Torsten Giese said food manufacturers in Scandinavia and the Benelux were also increasingly automating their machinery.
“If you are automated you can say you are independent of what’s happening in the labour market,” he added.
Ishida Europe is showing various pieces of equipment on stand 5510, including the QX-1100 tray sealer.
