Newsquest planning to close Newport plant

Newspaper group Newsquest is set to close its Newport printing plant following a review of its Wales and Gloucestershire sites.

A 30-day consultation on the potential closure of the site, which prints the South Wales Argus, began on Monday (7 January).

If the plant does close, 21 print jobs will be lost. Newspapers printed at the site are scheduled to be moved to other facilities, where Newsquest is switching to overnight printing.

According to Gavin Steacy, managing director at Newsquest Wales and Gloucestershire, the review found that the company had “significant” capacity in the region.

He said: “Newport is our least efficient plant and it makes no sense not to be using capacity that is available. We are always looking to be as efficient as possible.

“We will now work through the finer details of the initial analysis, which will include looking at the employees at the site and their situation.”

Steacy confirmed that efforts would be made to find them suitable roles elsewhere in the business.
Meanwhile, Newsquest’s Worcester site has agreed to recognise union Unite. A ballot of workers voted unanim-
ously to recognise the union.
